About Us
The Department of History and Political Studies is one of the departments under the Faculty of Social Sciences, College of Art and Social Sciences. The Department currently awards two undergraduates degrees in Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies and Bachelor of Arts in History to several number of students and is one of the largest degree awarding departments of the college. The Department is in the process of starting two master degree programmes in political studies: MPhil and MPA.
Over several years the Department has been engaged in carrying out its fundamental responsibilities in teaching mainstream courses in History and Political Science in addition to honouring service invitations from the Department of Geography and Rural Development and the Faculty of Law. Service courses taught include Introduction to Historical Studies, History of Slavery in Africa,Historical Monuments in Ghana and African Political Systems and The Political Process in Ghana to first and second year students in the Culture and Tourism course.
The Department also offers service courses in the History of Ghana and African Political Systems to the second year Law students. Lecturers and graduate students engage vigorously in research for the enhancement of academic activities in the Department.The KNUST Department of History and Political Studies is ranked among the best in the country. The department trains students in the fundamentals of historical and Political skills that will provide a foundation for excellence in a wide range of careers and profession.
Research expertise covers a wide range of aspects of human history, from ancient to contemporary societies, and political theory, public policy, media and politics, as well as History and regional politics, and further transcends these confines. These skills culminate in a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in a stimulating research environment.
